Two Steps forward, Two Steps Back

Who remembers this classic?

Well hello there. It’s been awhile. TOO long. I’ve had my head deeply buried in all of the non exciting not so instaworthy side of growing a startup. Finances, risk analysis, pounding the pavement for investors.

People keep asking us with excitement and bated breath about when we’re opening our first location. To which I permanently now have the classic banger, Opposites Attract by 80’s queen Paula Abdul stuck in my head. 'Two steps forward, two steps back’…

Trying to get any start up funded is difficult. Trying to build out an idea for a business is difficult. Doing an MVP, difficult. Pouring your total energy, all of your finances and time into a start up because you believe with every fiber of your being that it’s the right thing to do, difficult. Responding to the question ‘how’s it going?’ from our amazing friends and supporters who believe in us, is more than difficult. Depending on the day, hearing that question can feel even, soul crushing. Now if Gemma was sat over my shoulder reading this she’d probably say, “ uh…that’s a little *ABM isn’t it? ‘soul crushing’?!” She’d be right, it’s a little over the top, but it is hardest part I’ve found in our startup journey. It’s not getting turned down by a potential investor, or worrying that no one shows up to one of our events, it’s the self imposed feeling of letting our awesome network down. Of well wishers hoping for a different answer than, ‘we’re close!’. Which we are by the way. Closer than ever. Every time we take two steps forward, even when pushed back a step or two, that reverse makes us stronger, more refined, more confident in what we’re aiming to do.

I’ve never been prouder of what we’re trying to build. A carefully curated female first, members club. A home for women to breakthrough. Create balance, belong, build a community. A place where we combat some of our toughest shadows, guilt and loneliness and a place to build confidence, have self growth. Most importantly we want it to be a place where you can breathe. Where you can find the best version of yourself. No judgement.

Tangibly what does that actually look like? Come into the clubhouse on a Monday morning, grab a coffee, get a workout in at our wellness hub, crack down on some work for a few hours, meetings, emails, OR meet the girls for lunch OR hang in a lounge and read a book or take a nap (one of my personal favs). If you have kids, no problem, we’ll have a service for that - a state of the art quality learning hub, all designed and implemented by Breaker cofounder, wizardess BFF, Gemma. If you find yourself with a free hour in your day and notice your roots are 3 inches long, check the app, our Breaker hair pros can sort you out. Feeling like you need to process? We’ll have a service for that too, mental health experts ready to cheer you on. Everything we need as women, under one roof, without the commute.

PS you won’t find me in the gym early in the morning, I’ll most likely be the grumpy one in a corner, quietly nursing a double Americano, high fiving a mirror in some Mel Robbins style way trying to fake being a morning person.

Not a morning person…

Now one thing we haven’t yet talked about but hear a lot of chatter and questioning around is “What about the men?!” “Are you anti- dude?” Gemma and I will be writing more about this in the upcoming weeks/months but the short answer is no! We love men, they can come in as associates/guests of women members. Need to host a meeting at the clubhouse, no problem, men are allowed! Want to have a retreat day with your team, friend group, or interpretive dance crew? No probs, everyone is welcome as long as they are a guest of a Breaker Babe member.

Think Friday night after work, you ring your partner to come to Breaker for dinner, knowing that there will be something on to entertain the kids while you have a meal, hang with friends, relax. Think summer weekends -well at least for the approx two weekends that MAY have sun- come with your family to hang at the pool and have some grub.

So. Watch this space. Gemma and I can’t wait to welcome you to a physical location. For now we’ll keep moving two steps forward…(I bet that little diddy is stuck in your head now too?!…you’re welcome)

*ABM- A Bit Much. Gemma’s loving, and (mostly) accurate nickname for me. I’m American, I’m Italian American, I’m passionate, I love big and loud, I’m over the top; sometimes, particularly for my not so American, British bestie-a. bit. much.
